Rad Women A-Z Initiative

Scattered across Downtown Grand Rapids, 26 electrical boxes have been transformed into vibrant works of art. Each one features a colorful portrait of an influential woman.

This project, known as the Rad Women Public Art Initiative, was launched in 2019 through a collaboration between Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. (DGRI) and local arts nonprofit Lions & Rabbits. Local female-identifying artists were commissioned to bring these portraits to life, inspired by the book Rad American Women A–Z by Kate Schatz with illustrations by Miriam Klein Stahl.

You can explore all 26 installations on an alphabetical walking tour through downtown. Plan for about 90 minutes to two hours at a casual pace. It’s the perfect way to experience both public art and the city streets.
